La prima esigenza per trovare il lavoro è soddisfare l'esigenza di raggiungere una indipendenza economica. Raramente l'esigenza economica si abbina al soddisfacimento di svolgere un'attività per piacere. In quest'ultimo caso la spinta più importante è avere esigenze interne da soddisfare. Normalmente per comodità, per convenienza ci si adagia al conseguimento del soddisfacimento minimale. Se non si accetta questo tipo di compromesso e si insiste nel cercare il soddisfacimento pieno di esigenze più profonde, per capacità e/o per fortuna alla fine può capitare di riuscire a raggiungere quanto desiderato.
